Boys Brigade - August 2006

On 19th May, at our Annual Inspection and Display, Stuart and Danny retired with their heads held high after a period of some 80 plus years combined service and a highly successful period in the company’s history. We take the opportunity, once again, to thank them both for their quite monumental efforts over these years and wish them well in their retirement.

May 20th 2006 our band took part in Beating the Retreat on Edinburgh Castle Esplanade as part of massed BB bands. Despite foul weather the event was a great success and was watched by a good few thousand spectators.

May21st 2006 our charity fundraiser for McMillan Cancer Relief took place on the cycle track from William Street to Forestmill. It was a glorious day and extremely well supported and my thanks not only to the many boys who took part but also to the many parents who turned up on the day, making it more of a family day out. It goes without saying a big thank you to the many in the congregation who sponsored boys or staff. The final figure is not yet known but it is clear that we will have raised in the region of £1,500.00 for this deserving cause.

May 22nd to June 30th 2006 was a very quiet time in the company calendar and a good time for me to bed in and feel my way as Captain.

July 1st 2006 Dunfermline Children’s Gala Parade and our band played their part in making it a day to remember for the thousands of people who turned up for the gala in glorious weather.

7th – 14th July 2006 we were at our annual camp in the picturesque town of Pitlochry . This year we took 30 boys to camp and it was a very nice surprise for them when Danny and Stuart paid a visit on the Tuesday. Although the weather could have been better at the start of the week, a great time was had by all.

23rd – 30th July 2006. This week three of our senior boys are on the KG6 course at Brigade Scottish Headquarters. This course trains suitable senior boys to become officers in the brigade and for us to have three boys on the course means that in a year’s time we should have three excellent new young officers in the company.

6th August 2006 . Again our band is participating in the Festival Cavalcade marking the start of the Edinburgh Festival. This parade is huge, watched by some 200,000 spectators. This is the last event of the session and I now look forward to the new session which starts on Friday, 1st September.
